When partners disagree about the future of the relationship
One partner may feel finished with the relationship while the other is asking for another chance. Conversations become circular and emotional, and an immediate decision can leave important questions unanswered.
Discernment counseling creates space to slow the process down and understand how the relationship reached this point.
Three possible paths
Discernment counseling is not traditional couples therapy. Its immediate purpose is clarity about what comes next. Couples consider three broad paths:
Continue the relationship as it is for now
Move toward separation or divorce
Commit to a serious effort to improve the relationship through couples therapy
Dr. Levin does not decide which path a couple should choose. He helps each partner examine their concerns, the role they may have played in the relationship's difficulties, and the possibility of meaningful change.
What the process can provide
Less pressure to make an immediate decision
A clearer understanding of how the relationship reached this point
Greater clarity about each partner's concerns and intentions
A realistic consideration of whether change is possible
A more deliberate foundation for whatever comes next
Is discernment counseling appropriate for us?
It may be appropriate when one partner is considering leaving, divorce or separation has been discussed but no final decision has been made, or previous couples therapy has not resolved the uncertainty.
If both partners are already committed to improving the relationship, couples therapy is usually the more appropriate place to begin.
Experienced guidance at a difficult turning point
Dr. Levin has worked with couples and individual adults since 1993. He guides difficult conversations while respecting each partner's perspective and autonomy. The purpose is neither to advocate for divorce nor to promise that every relationship can be repaired. It is to support a clearer, more considered decision.
